Ganesh Chaturthi is a time of vibrant celebrations and delicious treats, and nothing says festive like the classic Ukadiche Modak. This traditional sweet is a favorite offering to Lord Ganesha, symbolizing prosperity and delight. With its soft, steamed outer shell and a sweet, coconut filling, Ukadiche Modak is a cherished delicacy in Indian households. Here’s a detailed recipe to help you make these scrumptious modaks at home.
Ingredients
For the Filling:
2 cups Fresh Grated Coconut
1 cup Brown Sugar (or Jaggery)
1 tsp Cardamom Powder
1 tsp Poppy Seeds
1 tsp Rice Flour (for thickening)
For the Outer Dough:
1 cup Rice Flour
1 cup Water
1 tsp Ghee
1/2 tsp Oil
1/2 tsp Salt
Saffron
Method:
1. Prepare the Filling:
In a medium-sized pan, combine the fresh grated coconut and brown sugar. Cook on medium heat, stirring frequently. As the sugar melts, the mixture will become slightly sticky. Cook until it’s well combined and retains some moisture. Once the mixture is half-cooked, add cardamom powder and roasted poppy seeds. Mix thoroughly. Add the rice flour to the mixture. This helps in binding the filling together. Cook until the mixture thickens and starts to leave the sides of the pan. Remove from heat and let it cool.
2. Prepare the Outer Dough:
Boil 1 cup of water in a pan. Once boiling, add ghee, oil, and salt. Gradually stir in the rice flour, mixing continuously to avoid lumps. Cover the pan and let the mixture cook for a few minutes. Stir occasionally. When the mixture turns into a smooth, paste-like consistency, transfer it to a bowl. While still hot, knead the dough into a soft, pliable consistency. To prevent sticking, you may grease your hands with a little oil.
3. Shape the Modaks:
Divide the dough into small portions, rolling each into a ball. Flatten each ball into a circle about 2 inches in diameter. Place the circle in your hand, forming a cup shape. Spoon a portion of the coconut filling into the center. Pinch the edges of the dough, pleating it around the filling, and then gather them at the top to form a peak. The shape should resemble a small bulb.
4. Steam the Modaks:
Line a flat steel sifter or steaming tray with a damp cloth. Arrange the prepared modaks on the cloth, ensuring they don’t touch each other. Place the sifter or tray in a steamer or a pressure cooker (without the whistle) and steam for about 15 minutes. Once steamed, brush the modaks with a little ghee to give them a glossy finish.
5. Serve:
Let the modaks cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm as a festive treat or store them in an airtight container for a few days. Tips for Perfect Ukadiche Modak:
